A World Heritage Site is a place that is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as being of special cultural or physical significance. The list is maintained by the international World Heritage Programme, which catalogues, names, and conserves sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.

The “Capital Cities and Tombs of the AncientGoguryeo Kingdom”, inscribed on the World Heritage List as a serial of sites, is the important part of Chinese cultures and history. In view of its outstanding artistic, historic, cultural and architectural value, the conservation, protection and promotion have been among the most important responsibility and obligation of Chinese people.

With the provisions of Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of 14 May 1954,UNESCO designation as a World Heritage Site provides prima facie evidence that such culturally sensitive sites are legally protected pursuant to the Law of War.UNESCO's work on heritage led to the adoption, in 1972, of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which has been ratified by China in 1985.As of July 2015, 48 sites in China are listed as World Heritage:34 cultural, 10 natural, and 4 mixed properties. According to the sites ranked by country, China is home to the second greatest number of World Heritage Sites with 48 sites.
